Why is SMSC important in schools?
Legislation clearly recognises that schools have a moral and legal duty to ensure that their work with pupils is more than helping them to achieve high standards in academic subjects. Pupils must also be given the opportunity to flourish emotionally, morally, spiritually and culturally so they can develop into responsible adults and contribute to society. Strong provision for SMSC is therefore at the heart of effective schools.
This is about the growth of the human spirit. It recognises the intangible e.g. truth, love, goodness and honour. It affects the way we see ourselves and others and how we define who we really are. It is about reflecting and acquiring insights into our own experiences and those of others.
This is about considering what is right and wrong. It is about helping people to establish and develop a moral or ethical compass which enables them to cope with moral conflict and decisions about moral issues and dilemmas. It helps explore principles and values such as justice, fairness, compassion, consideration, truth and respect.
This is about getting on with others. It is about living in communities (local, regional, national and international) and recognising roles, rights and responsibilities. It is about working for the common good, forming positive relationships and treating others with respect.
This is about heritage, tradition and identity and how it shapes our lives and the lives of others. It is about understanding cultural diversity in all of its forms and how this contributes to individuals and communities. Cultural development is inward and outward looking.
